The Infrared Thermal Sensing Safety Alert System for the Elderly is a privacy-preserving bathroom alert system that monitors an individual’s safety in a private space by analysing real-time thermal data to detect human movement. When the body movement of the individual is not detected for a period of time, an alarm will alert the caretakers that the individual is in danger. The system features several movement-sensitivity levels and can be installed easily in toilets or bathrooms, providing safer monitoring in high-risk areas where elderly individuals may require immediate assistance.
The pilot run has been conducted in TWGHs Jockey Club Rehabilitation Complex, demonstrating the practical application of this bathroom alert system in a real-world rehabilitation and care setting. The project highlights how a privacy-preserving bathroom alert system can enhance the safety of the elderly while respecting their dignity in personal spaces.
In 2019, the system won a Gold Medal at the 47th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva. It also received a Silver Medal at the 1st Asia Exhibition of Inventions Hong Kong, which was held in 2018. The system received wide media coverage, reflecting both industry and public recognition of this bathroom alert system as an innovative solution developed to improve protection for the elderly.
