The Hillside Sentinel project aims to enhance the safety and resilience of hillside
infrastructure in Hong Kong by developing an intelligent monitoring system for proactive maintenance. Extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall and typhoons, have led to an increased risk of landslides due to debris accumulation and water overflow in surface channels. This project addresses critical challenges, including the lack of image-based detection systems, absence of water flow monitoring, and inefficiency in reducing false alerts.
Project Objectives
1. Develop an image-based detection system capable of identifying surface channel abnormalities on natural hillsides.
2. Design and implement an energy-efficient monitoring system to track water flow
direction, velocity, and estimate the water volume in surface channels.
3. Develop a centralized platform that provides timely alerts for proactive maintenance.
Impact and Benefits
- Enhanced Slope Safety: minimizes injuries, fatalities, and property damage.
- Proactive Maintenance: Real-time monitoring reduces the costs and risks associated with reactive repairs.
- Scalability: The low-cost, image- and radar-based solutions are deployable across Hong Kong’s extensive hillside network without significant infrastructure changes.
