Project Title: Tele-Control Warehouse Stackers Using 5G
Hosting Institution: LSCM R&D Centre (LSCM)
Abstract: Labour shortage and high rental rate are two common challenges faced by many local warehouses. One notable technological solution is the use of autonomous-guided vehicles to improve working efficiency; however, they provide limited help for tasks which are more specific or complicated in nature.
In this project, our investigation is to enhance existing warehouse vehicles using Fifth Generation Cellular Network (5G) and advanced sensing technologies. The use of 5G can provide high-speed and low-latency data transmission. This, not only, enables telecontrolling multiple vehicles at the same time, but, also, allows incorporation of additional sensing technologies such as cameras for live image processing, and distance detection through laser technology (LiDAR). Commercially available warehouse vehicles such as stackers will be retrofitted with the developed technologies.
The potential impact and benefit of this project include reducing manpower and potential risks of accident and injury and enhancing warehouse efficiency. In addition, the deliverables can be easily applied to other construction and logistic applications.
