Elderly Lifter for Sit-to-Stand Training
img

The aging population in Hong Kong is bringing about challenges in the society. The elderly service industry is facing the problems of labour shortages, heavier workload and growing demand for specialised care services. The adoption of innovative technology would enhance the efficiency and service quality of the industry.

The Elderly Lifter developed by LSCM is programmable which allows customised movement for different users. It was developed with a training program and it aims to enhance the strength of the elderly people’s lower limb. The users can receive the training of sit-to-stand movement with varying degrees of movement speed and support level from the device. Apart from providing training, it can also assist the staff in the elderly homes in moving the elderly people from one location to another.

Different supporting systems were designed for the patients with different capabilities. For the physically stronger patients, an elbow supporting fixture can be used to stabilise the patient’s arm. He or she needs to hold the handle of the fixture and stand up as the lifter moves. For the physically weaker patients, an underarm supporting fixture can be used to stabilise their bodies. And a safety belt has been added to support the patient’s body and prevent him/her from falling. The patient’s underarm is secured by the supporting fixture and he/she would be able to stand up as the lifter moves. There are two buttons for the patients to control the movement on their own. An emergency button has also been added for the caretaker and physiotherapist to use.

The Elderly Lifter has been trial-used in the elderly homes of Sik Sik Yuen and was proven effective in providing training to the elderly. It was also showcased in the Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit (GIES) 2025 and a lot of elderly visitors were attracted to learn about its functions at the event.
