Technology for the Community

LSCM supported the COVID-19 Universal Community Testing Programme with logistics technology

Most countries in the world are still suffering from the crisis brought by the COVID-19 pandemic lately. The government of different countries are coming up with new measures to deal with the pandemic, and making use of technologies to reduce the number of infected cases.

Subsequent to our support to the Government of the HKSAR in its quarantine measures with the StayHomeSafe System earlier this year, LSCM once again supported the Government’s initiative in the COVID-19 Universal Community Testing Programme (UCTP) in September which aimed to identify those infected in the community.

This time, LSCM made use of our logistics technologies to manage the overall logistics arrangement and secure the delivery of materials in the UCTP. To manage the logistics arrangement more effectively, we set up a command centre and deployed our real-time systems and technologies to secure timely and smooth delivery of the specimen collection boxes, Universal Transport Medium (UTM) and empty collection boxes among the warehouse, Community Testing Centres and laboratories. Besides, various technologies including Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics and visualisation, location track and trace, and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) were applied in the delivery process. To facilitate record-taking of the distribution and collection of the specimen collection boxes, a QR code was placed on each box and Near Field Communication (NFC) technology was utilised. In addition, we made use of BLE technology and GPS technology to track the location of the specimen collection boxes throughout the delivery process to ensure that the specimens were safely delivered to the laboratories. And the real-time Inventory & Distribution Management System was used for managing the stock and delivery of the UTM.

To enable real-time communications among different parties, our staff in the command centre liaised and communicated with the personnel in the 148 Community Testing Centres on Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories and out-lying islands via online communication platforms. When there was any shortage of materials in the Community Testing Centres, we were notified immediately.

With our years of experience and expertise in the research and development of logistics related technology, we are delighted to have assisted Hong Kong in combating COVID-19 since early 2020. In the fight against COVID-19, we have enhanced our various systems and gained more experience in deploying our technologies in different circumstances. We will continue with our efforts in developing more innovative technologies for the benefit of the industry and the community.

LSCM Command Centre was set up for real-time liaison and communication with 148 Community Testing Centres.

Mr Simon Wong, CEO of LSCM, introduced a real-time system to Ms Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of HKSAR, at the temporary air-inflated laboratories in Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park Sports Centre.

A QR code was placed on collection box and Near Field Communication (NFC) technology was applied.
