Traffic Simulation and the Software VISSIM: Improving Transportation Efficiency
2023年07月18日

Traffic simulation plays a crucial role in solving problems related to the operation of road systems and improving traffic flow. Simulation provides ways to optimize road operations by modeling real-world road environments. In particular, simulation enables us to predict traffic flow by considering several key factors as variables, including vehicle speed, road characteristics, traffic signals, and traffic volume.

Traffic simulations can be used for a variety of purposes. For example, it is possible to adjust the cycle and timing of traffic signals with the aim of avoiding traffic jams and improving traffic flow in road conditions. In addition, traffic congestion can be alleviated in high-traffic areas by directing vehicle drivers to follow different routes. It also plays an important role in the design and development of road systems by simulating different scenarios when designing new road systems. In this way, traffic simulation helps improve road systems and maintain more efficient traffic flow. Furthermore, the improved road system brings various effects such as easing traffic congestion, improving traffic safety, saving energy, and protecting the environment. Thus, by building a more efficient transportation system, the economic, environmental, and social health of the city can be improved.

VISSIM, developed by PTV Group, is a popular software program for traffic simulation. It models real-world road environments in 2D or 3D and simulates various traffic flow scenarios. VISSIM can model different types of transportation modes such as vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles, and consider various factors such as traffic signals, traffic volume, lanes, and road characteristics. Traffic safety can also be evaluated by simulating traffic accidents that occur in real road environments. VISSIM is easy to integrate with other software, allowing operators and users to easily analyze simulation results and optimize road systems. Currently, VISSIM is widely used by businesses, government agencies, and research institutes, and is one of the most useful tools for solving various traffic problems.

LSCM is conducting various studies to build efficient transportation systems in Hong Kong. In parallel, traffic simulation using VISSIM software is also being conducted to test different traffic models and validate the performance and efficiency of the developed model. We hope that our research will serve as a foundation for Hong Kong to take a step closer to becoming a smart city by upgrading its transportation system.
