LSCM Technology Development < Previous | Home | Next >

In order to strengthen the logistics sector in Hong Kong and enhance its competitiveness, the LSCM R&D Centre is committed to researching and developing related technologies to support the industry. Recently, two new projects namely “Integration of GPS and Beidou” and “SMe-Plug” have been carried out to improve business process of logistics companies.

Development of a Hong Kong Positioning Infrastructure based on GPS, Beidou, and Ground based Augmentation System

Since 2000, the Lands Department has established a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) control network, and developed the Hong Kong Satellite Positioning Reference Station (SatRef) network (an active control system with 15 continuous operating reference stations), to support high accuracy positioning in Hong Kong using GNSS technology. However, given the high density of skyscrapers in Hong Kong and limitation of commercial devices, accurate positioning is not always attainable, especially in build-up areas where satellite signals will be reflected and blocked.

This project aims to further enhance the performance of the SatRef network by integrating GPS (Global Positioning System) and Beidou, the Chinese satellite navigation system. Upon the completion of project, it will provide a reliable and high precision augmentation system to support the technology advances in surveying, logistics operation, Geographic Information System (GIS) applications, and Location-based Services (LBS) in Hong Kong.

SMe-Plug for SME’s Connectivity to e-Freight Service Platforms and Improved Competitiveness

Efficient service and on-time delivery are crucial to the logistics industry. However, small to medium enterprises (SMEs) are difficult to allocate resources in system integration with various air and sea cargo logistics service platforms. To address this challenge, the LSCM R&D Centre has developed a SMe-plug software, which is designed for the SMEs to handle e-document based communications with logistics service platforms. This system facilitates any software developers (either from in-house IT support team or from out-sourced system integrators) to connect to and make use of the services of logistics service platforms by deploying a set of readily available and re-usable connector and converter plug-in modules with minimal effort and cost.

The SMe-plug software system provides a framework for software developers to integrate components to form solutions fits individual SME. The system eases their integration work with the SMEs’ Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. If you want to find out more, please click here
